Legendary Master Gun and Rifle Maker, Mark William Sullivan
Mark is known for his work at Holland & Holland and Willams & Son, and is the lead collaborator in bringing this fine gun and work of art to life for Long & Sons.
Mark Sullivan produces the heart of many bespoke gun-building projects for some of the world's most prestigious gunmakers. An actioner by trade, Mark formerly worked at Holland & Holland before establishing himself as one of the trade's most sought-after specialists. Today, he crafts Holland & Holland 'Royal' pattern actions for distinguished firms including William Evans, William & Son, and Westley Richards, content to let others put their names to his exceptional work while he remains quietly anonymous to the shooting public.
Working in the traditional manner from forgings—a process requiring around 290 hours for actioning alone and 800 hours total for a complete build—Mark represents a dying breed of British gunmaking artisans. He has little personal interest in guns or shooting; for him, actioning is simply his craft. You won't find him on social media or at shooting events, but if you want to build a best quality bespoke shotgun using time-honored methods and uncompromising standards, Mark Sullivan is your man. His dedication to craftsmanship over self-promotion has made him one of the most respected, if least known, figures in the London gun trade.
On a Mission to Craft the Most Elegant and Effective Side-by-Side
This bespoke shotgun represents the pinnacle of traditional British gunmaking, where master craftsmen and legendary engravers collaborated to create a functional work of art destined for the quail fields of the United States.
The quarter rib features elegant leaf and scroll engraving with wedges of scrollwork extending from either breech. The barrels are fitted to the brushed bright finished Holland & Holland "serpentine" bolstered sidelock action with hidden third fastener. The clipped fences showcase a Persian leaf pattern with William Morris-inspired scroll engraving that flows across the barrels, surrounding Long & Sons signature banners and coat of arms, then continuing onto the top lever, trigger guard, and both tangs. This exceptional engraving was executed by legendary English Master Engraver William Wild, renowned for his extensive work at Holland & Holland and James Purdey & Sons.
The lock plates display beautifully detailed bulino engraved quail game scenes by legendary English Master Engraver Peter Cusak—Bob White quail flushing from tall grass into a West Texas sky on the left, and Blue Quail navigating an arid West Texas landscape on the right. The gun features bushed firing pins, double triggers, a right-hand rolled trigger guard, and tang-mounted automatic safety. Both the splinter fore-end and straight stock are crafted from gorgeously figured Turkish walnut with multi-point checkering and a hand-rubbed slacum finish. An oak and chocolate brown cowhide leather takedown case with navy blue goat leather lining houses the gun along with horn-handled tools, nickel oiler, cleaning rod, de-cocking block, and snap caps.
